Almost every enquiry that reaches us is a replacement. A jacket water cooler has gone soft after fifteen seasons, a lube oil cooler is passing oil into the sea chest, or a deck crane cooler has corroded to powder in the salt air. The vessel is alongside and the engine has to run. Our job is to read the nameplate, match the duty and the connections, and put a marine heat exchanger on the dock that fits the existing pipework without a rebuild of the surrounding system.

Shell and Tube: the Engine Room Workhorse

Jacket water duty on a marine diesel is a liquid-to-liquid problem with seawater on one side, so it lands on a shell and tube unit with copper-nickel tubes and bronze bonnets almost every time. The B, HC and AB frames cover it from a 10 HP auxiliary to about 1250 HP on a single unit, and the choice between them comes down to horsepower, the shell pressure the closed loop sees, and whether the existing feet and connection centres have to be reproduced.

The same frames carry lube oil, hydraulic and gear oil duty, and with the titanium tube option they carry raw seawater in warm, chlorinated or polluted water where copper-nickel has a short life. Plate and Frame for Central Cooling

On larger vessels the central fresh-water cooler, the HVAC chiller condenser and the refrigeration condenser are often gasketed plate and frame units rather than shell and tube. Pressed titanium plates hang in a carbon steel frame between a fixed end and a pressure plate on tie bolts, with all four connections on the fixed end so the pack opens without breaking pipework.

Capacity is changed by adding or removing plates, which is useful when a vessel is re-engined or a chiller is upgraded. Air Cooled Cores Coated for Salt Air

Deck cranes, winches, thruster power packs and hydraulic circuits on open decks often have no clean seawater supply nearby. There an air cooled core with its own fan does the job, as a tube-and-fin core where cost and easy repair matter or a brazed bar-and-plate block where vibration and hose whip are the enemy, in AC electric, hydraulic motor or 12 V and 24 V DC drive. Plain aluminium fins do not survive a season of spray, so every core we ship for marine use is coated with Heresite before it leaves.

The A, H and DCS series are listed under Hydraulic Cooling, with the two core types and the coating detail under Air Cooled. Oil coolers are sized from heat load, oil grade and the pressure drop the circuit will tolerate, so send those with the enquiry.

Immersion Plates for Tanks and Holds

A fish hold, a bait well or a brine tank is easier to chill from the inside than through a pumped loop. An immersion plate is two sheets of titanium or stainless laser-welded in a dimple pattern and inflated, with coolant or refrigerant circulating inside and the product on the outside. There are no tubes to block, the surface is flat enough to clean with a brush, and the plate hangs on the tank wall where the old one was.

Sizes and ratings are per duty, worked from tank volume, the product and its starting temperature, the refrigerant or coolant available and the time you have to pull the load down. Send those with the existing plate dimensions or a nameplate photograph and we confirm the replacement.
