The Three Things That Size a Marine Cooler

The engine model and rating first. Jacket water heat rejection comes off the engine data sheet for that rating, and it is the number the cooler has to carry. For an oil cooler the equivalent is the oil flow, the grade and the heat load, with the pressure drop the pump can spare.

Seawater second. The inlet temperature on the hottest day you operate and the raw water flow the pump delivers set the approach the cooler can achieve. A unit sized on winter water derates in August.

Which Water You Run In

Open ocean, brackish estuary, silty river or a chlorinated harbour intake are different duties for the tubes. Copper-nickel with zincs covers most of the fleet; titanium earns its place in warm, dirty or treated water. Say which you have and we will say which tube.

Materials and Options

The marine build is bronze bonnets, copper-nickel tubes and zinc anodes. Tell us if you need titanium tubes, 316 stainless, SAE rather than NPT connections, or a specific bonnet orientation to meet existing hoses.

Replacing an Existing Unit

If there is a nameplate, photograph it and send the picture. A part number tells us the frame, the tube length, the pass arrangement and the material set in one string, and we can confirm it or offer the current equivalent without any calculation at all.

Where the nameplate is gone, measure the shell diameter and the overall length, count the connections, and note their sizes and which way they face. That is normally enough to identify the frame.

Space on the Engine

A marine cooler usually lives on brackets alongside the engine with hoses on both ends. Tell us the overall length you can accept and whether the bonnets can be rotated, because that decides whether a replacement drops in or the hoses have to move.

Zinc anodes need access to change them. If the bonnet ends face a bulkhead, say so and we will orient the plugs where you can reach them.

Quantity, Schedule and Destination

Twin engines usually mean two coolers, and a fleet may mean more, so send the real number. A need-by date lets us tell you which frames are on the shelf and which are built, and a ship-to port lets the freight go on the quote instead of arriving as a surprise afterwards.

The form above, an email, or a phone call. A photograph of the nameplate on the failed cooler, or the engine model and rating, works as well as a typed specification.

Nothing has to be complete. If a number is missing we will tell you which one and why it matters.

We Size and Select


We take the heat rejection from the engine data for your rating, check it against your seawater temperature and flow, and pick the shortest catalogued frame that carries it with sensible tube velocity.

If the duty sits between two frames, or the envelope rules out the obvious answer, you get both options with the trade-off written out.

3.

You Get a Quote


A part number, a price, a lead time and the performance the selection is based on, so the numbers can be checked rather than taken on trust.
