A Series Air Cooled Coolers

Switchboard power, continuous duty

The A Series is the air cooled range for installations with an electrical supply. An AC motor turns the fan, the fan pulls ambient air through a bar-and-plate aluminium core, and oil gives up its heat on the way through. Sizes run from A5 at the small end, suited to a compact hydraulic pack or a small gearbox circuit, through to A275, which handles substantial continuous loads on larger machinery.

Because the fan is independent of the machine it cools, an A Series unit can run whenever the control system wants it to. That allows thermostatic fan control, so the fan runs only above a set oil temperature, which saves power and noise and lets oil warm up quickly from cold. On a vessel where noise near accommodation matters, that control is worth having and it is one of the practical advantages of an electric drive.

The core is rated 250 PSI and 250°F with SAE or NPT connections, and every core we ship for marine service carries Heresite. The coating is a baked phenolic finish applied to AKG cores by HeatX for salt-air duty, and it does not change the pressure or temperature ratings. What it changes is how long the fins stay attached to the tubes in an environment that eats bare aluminium.

How the A Series core and fan work together

Oil enters a manifold at one side of the core and distributes into flat oil passages formed between plates. Between those oil layers sit air passages filled with corrugated fin material, and the whole assembly is brazed into one block. Heat crosses from oil to plate to fin and then into the air stream, and because everything is metallurgically joined there are no mechanical fin-to-tube contacts to loosen.

The fan is mounted in a shroud on one face and either pulls air through the core or pushes it, depending on the arrangement ordered. Pulling generally gives more even flow across the face; pushing puts the motor in cooler air. The shroud matters as much as the fan, because without it air short-circuits around the core rather than through it.

Common FAQs

It comes from the heat load, the oil flow and grade, the design air temperature at the core and the allowable pressure drop. The frame range runs from A5 for small hydraulic packs to A275 for substantial continuous loads. Send those four numbers and the mounting position and we will name the frame.

Yes, and it is worth doing. Because the motor is independently powered, a thermostatic switch in the return line can run the fan only above a set temperature. That gives quicker warm-up from cold, lower average noise, and avoids over-cooling oil into a high viscosity condition in winter. Specify it at order rather than retrofitting.

We apply it to the AKG core before the unit ships. It is a baked phenolic coating and it needs a controlled process, so it is not something to brush on at a mooring. It covers the core and leaves the 250 PSI and 250 degree ratings exactly as they were.

Look for recirculation. If discharge air can reach the inlet face, the core is cooling itself with its own exhaust and will fall well short of rating. Keep both faces clear, point the discharge away from the inlet and away from anywhere a person works, and avoid mounting next to an exhaust or sunlit plating.

Not usually. If the core is sound, with fins intact and no leaks, the motor and fan can be replaced on their own. Send the motor nameplate and the cooler frame number. If the fins have started to detach at the roots, that is a different conversation and the core is the real problem.

An A Series number is the letter A followed by the frame size, from A5 at the small end through to A275, with suffixes covering fan arrangement, motor voltage and connection style. The frame size tracks core face area and airflow rather than a dimension you can measure directly, which is why the number matters more than the outline.
